Community marketplace: Do you mean a subforum here, or some central place in-game? I assume you mean a subforum, and that would be a lot more user-friendly than reading a collection of signs. People could use it to initiate personal trades, advertise things they need or want to get rid of, or ask for donations of materials and labor to large community projects.

Where people are: I had something in mind so please tell me what you think. I've been waiting for the dynmap to be mostly cleared, and we're getting close. With the map known it will be easy to divide it visually into large geographic areas. My plan was to have a public list where people could elect to add their name telling the world where they live. Also, each region would have a subforum where people can discuss things affecting them locally (coordinated road systems, nether tunnels, farms, etc).
That would be good, I know Dynmaps have markers that you can place to easily see homes and spawners etc.
General area of bases: I think a ground rule of an X-number block buffer is a good idea. I'm definitely more of a private hermit build type person, but a couple of people have settled near me likely because of the usefulness of what has been developed nearby my base. Although one was banned for xray and the other hasn't been on in a few days, so if that continues it will really just be my wife and I, which is pretty normal for us. Anyway, I'll add in a buffer expectation. Do you think 100 is a good number? The map will be expanded as needed so if things get crowded space won't be an issue. Also I'll need to figure out some language which prevents people from unfairly using the rule to their advantage (like building a couple of small houses on the mushroom island in just the right spots so that nobody else can get mooshrooms or something).
Probably about 200 blocks would be better I think, unless of course the two people agree to the closeness of their bases. You could simply add that entire biomes cannot be claimed, or just make a special exception for biomes that we only have one of at the moment. (Savannah and mooshroom atm I believe)
All in all I believe these changes would help the server be more user-friendly, while still keeping the hermits happy
